ISO 9001:2026 Confirmed for 16 September Publication

The Final Draft of the International Standard ISO 9001:2026 has been approved, and ISO has confirmed publication for 16 September 2026. The revision replaces the 2015 edition of the world’s most widely used quality management standard, with over one million organisations certified across 189 countries. A three-year transition window will follow, meaning all certificates issued to the 2015 edition must be transitioned before approximately September 2029.

The revision is an evolution, not a rewrite. The core requirements remain intact, but several targeted changes introduce new expectations. Top management is now explicitly required to promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour, going beyond documenting procedures to what an organisation actually rewards, follows up, and learns from. Risk and opportunity management are more clearly separated, encouraging organisations to both prevent problems and actively pursue improvement. The 2024 climate change amendment is integrated into the main text, and context analysis now requires consideration of sustainability and environmental factors. Annex A has been substantially expanded with improved guidance. Standard Norge expects the Norwegian edition to follow shortly after the English publication, in late September or October.

For anyone running an integrated management system, the timing is deliberate. ISO 14001:2026 was published in April. ISO 9001:2026 arrives in September. Both follow the updated Harmonised Structure, which means tighter alignment with ISO 45001 and ISO 27001 and simpler integration across standards. If you completed a gap analysis for ISO 14001 earlier this year, the same exercise for ISO 9001 should be straightforward. The window before the transition clock starts is now measured in weeks.
