Talking about gear is always fun. Here is my rundown of the gear I bring on a regular camping trip.
DD 3×3 Tarp
Great little versatile and affordable tarp. I have a fixed ridgeline on it with prussic knots, allowing me to install it quickly.
3×3 meters is a good size for taking shelter for 1 or two people. For more, I would pick the bigger 6×6 version.
A tarp is the most versatile camping equipment. I mainly use it in combination with my hammock. But I’ve also used it as a tent, as seen in the picture.
DD Travel Hammock / Bivi
I went for the Bivi version because it is waterproof, allowing for usage on the ground as well. The downside of this is that it’s a bit heavier, and condensation cannot escape. Resulting in a slightly damp sleeping bag in the morning. I added carabiners to the rope so that the rain from the threes does not run down into the hammock.
Exped UL7
I’m not going anywhere without my Exped. It makes the difference between a good night’s sleep and a miserable night. When your in the market for a new inflatable mat, make sure it has a layer of isolation. The air in the mattress itself does not provide any warmth and will give you a cold back.
Helium V5 W 55
I’ve used a Bergans Cyclops II for many years, as one cannot go wrong with a heavy-duty military backpack. But it was too big and heavy for lightweight hiking and camping.
Fenix E35 V3.0 LED
A light so powerful it burned a hole in my pants pocket. I love the power and the rechargeable battery. But I hate the ”touch” power button. It will turn on on its own if you put it anywhere else than upright on a table.
Petzl IKO® CORE
A funny little headlamp. It’s a comfortable lamp (for running as well) because the weight is well distributed. It’s also (more) compatible with biking or climbing helmets. I use the rechargeable battery with it, which I recommend.
Xtorm XR202 Rugged Powerbank 20000 mAh
Reliable power is a must for me. There are cheaper options out there, but not all powerbanks are shaped equally. What I like about this power bank is that it will shut itself off, when the device you are charging is full. Saving you of power when charging overnight. It also has a flashlight, which I use a lot more than I expected to do.
Garmin Fenix 5X
Great watch, and right now you can pick it up for around a hundred Euros second-hand. Which really is a steal. It makes navigating and tracking activities so much easier and fun, compared to using your phone.
Primus OmniFuel
Primus makes some great outdoor equipment. And they have been doing so for many years. The Ominifuel (the lightweight version of the multifuel) is a very versatile burner. One downside of it is that it is extremely noisy. It’s like sitting next to a jet engine. You can, however, buy a damper for it, which makes cooking a lot more enjoyable.
SnowPeak Ti-Single 600 Cup
The Japanese make the best camping gear, their eye for beauty and quality is unparalleled. You might ask, but it’s just a cup? Yes, it is, and it’s not cheap either. But this will last you the rest of your life. It’s lightweight and durable. It also fits a small primus burner ánd canister seamlessly. Making it the perfect setup for a lightweight hot drink on the go.
Primus CampFire Cookset Small
A good pot set for when you’re planning on cooking on the campfire. The thick bottom allows for a good distribution of heat. I don’t like the skillet, however. I tried to season it, but I cannot get it to be non-sticky when cooking in it. So I just use it as a plate, and I bring another pan for frying.
