A Weekend at the DNT Cabin Grautheller: The Last Snow of the Season in Sirdal

Our cabin trip to Grautheller last week was a perfect early spring getaway in the mountains.

After navigating the tricky parking situation in the village of Suleskard, we made our way along the private road that leads to the cabin. Though supposedly reserved for kraftstasjon workers, there were quite a few cars on the road.

Grautheller is a charming DNT cabin that sits near a hydroelectric dam. Keyless and open year-round, it welcomed us with its well-maintained facilities and cosy atmosphere. The helpful hyttevakt ensured we had fresh water and shared tips about other cabins in the network.

Saturday brought cloudy skies and wind, but Sunday rewarded us with a stunning sunrise and patches of blue sky. Before heading back to civilisation, we took an morning swim in the “vak” (ice hole) – shocking at first, but the sun was bright enough to warm up again.

While fjellski would have been ideal for the terrain, our hiking boots served us well on the hardened snow as we trained for the Four Day Marches. I’ve uploaded the GPS tracks from Sulekard to the cabin. One route for wintertime is taking a shortcut on the lake. The other is for summer.

The private road can be walked or biked, but the gate is only accessible to kraftstasjon workers and authorized personnel. Despite this restriction, we noticed quite a lot of traffic for a weekend day.
